Save My Soul

My latest song, Save My Soul, is out now and available to stream or download on my Music page. I ummed and aahed over which brass instrument to use in the opening bars and middle eight. In the end, the rich and melodic tones of a tenor trombone won out — I like its deep yet playful sound and it seemed at home in a song that has Latin Funk influences. The instrument's melodramatic timbre coupled with an uplifting melody seemed to complement the lyrics.

In this song, I liken the first experiences of romantic love to being lost at sea; nautical references can be found throughout. Save My Soul is an interpolation of the mariner's international distress signal, "Save Our Souls." The use of phrases like "Strong Waves," "Thick Mist," "Spindrift," and "Your Light Guided Me" reinforce the theme.

Writing these lyrics came very much from my heart and is a recollection of events and feelings during my very first love affair as a young adult. I haven't had to use my imagination much; it happened for real.

I'd like to dedicate this song to Carrie and hope she has the opportunity to hear it some day.

If you would like to view the lyrics to the song as the music is playing, please go to my Music page and activate the Note & Script symbol on the track player. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy it.
