Phil Morland Studio Musician
I am a songwriter, lyricist and music producer, predominately working in the Smooth Jazz and Quiet Storm genres.
I create my songs using Virtual Studio Technology and VSTi instruments. This way of making music provides many advantages over older analogue methods. Thousands of instruments are available and each instrument can be infinitely modified to create a unique sound. Traditional instruments that would be unrealistic to use due to cost or rarity are available at the VST producer's fingertips, allowing novel and innovative music to be explored.

Every songwriter has their own creative methods. I usually begin with developing the lyrics, this gives me a feel for the musical structure that I would like to use for the piece. I then notate a basic melody and rhythm. Next, I choose and hone the instruments. From this skeleton I gradually build the piece by bringing in more instruments, adding flourishes, ornaments etc., constantly working the mix as I go. Finally, I master the tracks so that they offer a pleasant listening experience on different devices.
For me, one of the most enjoyable tasks when creating a song has always been writing the lyrics. Unfortunately, I have not been blessed with a decent singing voice so, in order to allow listeners to have some idea of how the vocals in my songs might sound, I use VSTi vocal instruments. My intention is not to diminish the beautiful and unique sound of a professional singer, rather to give people the chance to hear how my music and lyrics might come together, given my own non-existent vocal abilities.
